Henry and I were walking home from the video store the other day when a huge rottweiler came lunging out at us. It was tethered, but it yanked so hard that it got loose and took a bite at Henry! He didn’t really get any teeth on him, but when I checked later, there was a good amount of rottie slobber on him, so it could have been much worse.
I yelled and kicked at it until he startled enough to back off. But I had no way of knowing if I was going to be next. All I knew was that I’d have a better chance than Henry. The owner came out and I said, “Is this your dog?” He kind of seemed amazed that his dog got loose. Apparently the big mean rottweiler gets aggressive around other male dogs, as if it’s my fault for walking by.
I hate this. I know that this neighbourhood isn’t the nicest and a lot of people around here have big dogs to protect their homes. But they don’t have to be mean. Just having a dog is a deterrent. Even having a small dog is usually enough to have burglars skip to the next house.
I hate seeing a dog being relegated to being just a security system, chained to the fence like that. Get a house alarm if you’re really worried. A dog, even if you get one for protection, is still a dog. A big dog needs training! And socialization! You need to be able to control it, and it has to know not to hurt people, just to scare them. Even more so than small dogs, since the bigger they get, the more harm they can do. What use is it when you have a dog that is as dangerous and unpredictable as the criminals you’re trying to avoid?
It makes me so mad.
