At My Mother’s Breast

Thursday, October 26th, 2006

Tonight we went to a free screening of this NFB film, which is made by Paul’s friend in Winnipeg. It’s about the filmmaker, her mother, her grandmother, and her aunts and female cousins. You see, three generations of women in her family have died of breast cancer, and she’s trying to deal with that by interviewing her family.

It could be a prairie novel: a young woman has grown up being emotionally closed and stoical, while her mother (a fantastically inquisitive woman) tries to break through and get her daughter to tell her how she feels. Aunts rally around each other as one of them gets sick, and cousins awkwardly share their feelings about self-examination and the fear of their mothers dying.

So much love, so much suppressed anxiety. Daughters trying to be strong for their mothers, mothers trying to be cheerful for their daughters. At one point, the filmmaker says something about being worried that something she says in the film might damage her relationship with her mother, but seeing the entire story like this makes me feel like she has nothing to worry about.

Grandparents die, then parents, then us. My last living grandparent, dad’s mom, died what? Five years ago, now? That hit me harder than I expected, and no one could understand why I was so upset about someone I hardly knew. But she is a part of me, I can see it even if it’s only in her face (the mouth!). And I worry that I’m losing that connection. I worry when my uncles are sick; I worry more when they die. So far my aunts are healthy, but boy are they getting old. And my parents too. I’m going to try to see them, or at least my mom, this week.

PS self-examining yourself doesn’t make you a pervert, so do it.

PPS you can always ask someone else to to do it for you.

A telephone solicitation

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

The phone rings. I answer.

M: Hello?

A: Hello, my name is Ashley and I’m calling from the Edmonton Journal and I’m calling to offer you seven day delivery for the price of a weekend subscription.

M: I think you should give it to me for free.

A: It is free, four days for free for the price of a weekend subscription.

M:Yes. I get a electronic subscription for the weekdays, and a weekend paper subscription, because I don’t want a big pile of paper at the end of the week. Trying to save trees, you know. But I think you should give me the paper for free because I freelance for the Journal. I actually help to make it.

A: Sorry about that, I will give them your feedback. But I can give you a seven day subscription.

M:I asked once if they could give me some kind of a deal, for having an electronic subscription plus a weekend paper subscription. But right now, I’m actually paying more than a seven day subscription for that. Not that I mind, what’s good for the company is good for me, right? But could you let someone know about this?

A: OK, I’ll let them know.

M: OK, thanks.

Poor Ashley. But I love these calls.

Ronnie Burkett: 10 Days on Earth

Friday, October 20th, 2006

If you’ve never been to see a Ronnie Burkett puppet show, you should definitely see this one. Or any of them, if you have the chance.

His little people are so finely detailed (the costumes! the tiny gestures!), and the set is so clever. This one is about a mentally handicapped man, Darryl, who doesn’t realize that his mother has died. We flashback to moments in his life, from the circumstances of his birth to meeting his friends to reading his favourite storybook about Honey Dog.

Burkett intercuts between Darryl’s life and the story of Honey Dog, which you can figure out is loosely parallel to the human characters’ search for home, friendship, and loss. It’s funny and sweet and sad. And things are “queer,” “gay,” and end up in a rainbow-coloured balloon– are we to draw comparisons between social outsiders and sexual outsiders? I think so.

A homeless man, Lloyd, is one of Darryl’s friends. He is the Father, our one true Lloyd. God, basically, in the form of the down-and-out. People walk past him every day, they don’t stop to listen, or even to help him onto his feel when he falls. What does that say about us?

And it’s not just strangers who seem scary. I think I’m guilty of taking those who are closest to me for granted. I give them a really hard time sometimes, and I shouldn’t. I should save my best self for them, and I’m really trying to do that now. It’s important. We’re all we have for each other.

Dentist

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

Going to the dentist is important. You can’t be happy if your teeth are in bad shape.

I have been going to the same dentist for over 20 years. In fact, aside from my family, he’s the person that I have known longest in Edmonton who I see on any regular basis. Every time I go, it’s the same Garfield poster on the ceiling (“9 out to 10 dentists who recommend candy to their patients prefer chocolate!”), dentally inspirational wall plaques (“Only floss the teeth you want to keep!”). It’s homey and familiar. I don’t know what I’ll do when he retires!

In any case, the visit only took half an hour. It’s only when a dental hygienist scrapes at the plaque on your teeth that you really know how well you’ve been taking care of them. She noticed, so I seem to be doing something right! I try to floss every day (but sometimes forget for weeks at a time), and have been using an electric toothbrush.

I used to think that electric toothbrushes were gimmicky and wasteful. But it seems like it’s been keeping my teeth cleaner, mostly because it’s got a timer and forces me to brush for a full two minutes. I recommend one, plus the daily flossing. Do it!

John Ralston Saul VS Todd Babiak

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

I love the new concept for Litfest, which is creative nonfiction. And I loved going to this discussion. Totally worth getting up in the morning on a Saturday, thinking about ideas. When do we stop to think of ideas?

Especially when it’s JRS and Todd. They’re both funny and smart, in different ways. They’re contrasts: Todd sitting bolt upright with his hands on his knees, JRS draped over chair and side table (is he colour-blind? you should’ve seen his outfit…).

They talked about free speech, democracy, education. What really piqued my interest was the idea that specialization and intellectual territorialism makes an education rather useless to society; someone who is part of such a system is part of an industry rather than providing a public serivce.

It made me wonder if I’m doing OK, using what I know to be a good, engaged citizen. I certainly have an education I don’t deserve, but I’m grateful that I have a base (however little I understood or retained from grad school), but I’m always concerned that what I do is shallow, or that my brain is shrinking or getting out of date. I do try to read. My daily circuit is pretty wide: the Journal, the Globe and Mail, Salon, the NY Times, CBC.ca, feministing, Perez Hilton. A little of everything. But am I doing OK?
