ah.
Saturday, April 29th, 2006Everyone who was at the Sidetrack:
Wednesday, April 26th, 2006Considering Franz Ferdinand was at the Shaw and everyone else was at the Oilers tailgate party at the Coliseum, we had a good number of folks show up to Smashula’s third show. It was fun, plus: OILLLERRRS!
Thanks to Trevor Tchir and his band for the last-minute overtime goal. And thanks to you all for showing up!
Here comes the bandwagon, I’m on it!
Sunday, April 23rd, 2006GOOOOOOOILLERRRSS!
The playoffs are exciting. I’m sorry I gave up on you.
Smashula!
Thursday, April 20th, 2006Possibly another show at the new Sidetrack on Tuesday…
Yes. It’s confirmed. Sidetrack, Tuesday April 25, opening for a nice folky guy who we’re gonna obliterate with noise. Sorry, folky guy.

Faithless
Monday, April 17th, 2006Have I mentioned how good this play is? You have until the end of the month to see it at Theatre Network.
I saw it last spring at Catalyst, and as far as I can tell they’ve added a little more in the lights and sound department, but the heart of it is still very simple and moving. See it!
Martha Stewart don’t need no manicure
Thursday, April 13th, 2006Unrealistic standards for homemaking aside, you gotta give the woman props: from a blue collar, immigrant background, she’s been a model, caterer, stock trader (oops) and media empress.
Naomi Judd is her guest today and while making lemon tarts, remarked, “Oh! You don’t have a manicure.” Martha replied, in her great, flat, no-nonsense way, “Short nails. I work.”
See? Unlike regressive back-to-homers like Caitlin Flanagan (awesome article here: http://www.salon.com/books/review/2006/04/12/flanagan/), she’s unabashedly a career woman.
Don’t you forget! (and by “you,” I mean “me,” which I realize is not grammatical, but you know what I mean.)
Tristram Shandy
Wednesday, April 12th, 2006Of course, it’s a complete mess: a meta-level, gossipy, simulacrum of a film that only vaguely references the novel, a work of narcissism on the part of star (and that term only very loosely, for fans of British television) Steve Coogan.
Naturally, it’s brilliant. Funny. Painstakingly self-referential. It’s another step beyond 24 Hour Party People, which another must-see by Michael Winterbottom, one of the most eclectic–in the true sense of the term, not just because he’s a go-to for mediocre projects that require competence and nothing else– filmmakers out there.

Famous Puppet Death Scenes
Friday, April 7th, 2006Last night,we went to see the Old Trout Puppet Workshop’s latest show. It’s excellent.
Puppets die and die, in creative and sometimes very touching ways (the whale! Oh, the whale!). Other times it’s comic relief (Bipsy und Mumu: NEIN.), or completely abstract and bewildering (the Japanese one). I have interviewed two trouts in the last two years, and I understand where that tilted sense of humour must come from. Very nice fellas, but a little weird in the read-too-much kind of way (i.e. the best kind).
It was a totally packed house. You should see it over the weekend if you can! It’s at the Catalyst, call Tix on the Square: 420-1757.
Accident in front of my house
Tuesday, April 4th, 2006Last night I was sitting at my desk at the window when I saw a Co-Op taxi rush headlong down the wrong side of the street, mowing down three trees in the median along the way. Thankfully, it was late enough that there was no oncoming traffic, but someone could have really got hurt!
The car stopped a couple blocks away. What the heck happened?
